Ajankohtainen kakkonen is a 45-minute current affairs program, broadcast in prime time once a week. One show usually covers four to five stories and the subjects vary from politics to popular culture.

The editorial staff consists of about 20 journalists covering Finland, and one froreign affairs reporter. While the main focus is in Finnish issues, there is always at least one foreign item covred in every show. Ajankohtainen kakkonen has several freelance reporters around the world giving reports on a regular basis. The program also runs stories produced by broadcasters or production companies such as BBC, Journeyman Pictures and Frontline.

Ajankohtainen kakkonen has been on air since 1969. It is the main product of the Current Affairs Department at the channel TV2 and the rating is about 700,000 viewers per show. This makes Ajankohtainen kakkonen one of the most popular current affairs programs in Finland.
