BILLY WILDER
Ihmisiä ei saa ikävystyttää ja heitä on kuitenkin hyvin vaikea olla ikävystyttämättä. Näin kiteyttää yhden elokuvanteon ristiriidoista legendaarinen ohjaajaguru Billy Wilder, joka jo vuodesta 1942 on tuonut valkokankaalle elokuvahistorian helmiä. Billy Wilder syntyi Itävallassa 1906. Wilderin isä oli liikemies ja koko perhe matkusti usein isän mukana. Isä olisi halunnut pojastaan lääkäriä tai lakimiestä. Poika päätyi kuitenkin reportterin ammattiin, jossa aloittelevana joutui usein tekemään työtovereidensa väheksymiä ns. "likaisia" töitä. Wilder kertoo kuinka rankkaa oli mennä esimerkiksi tappajan kotiin pyytämään valokuvaa murhaajasta tai kuinka rujoa oli raportoida onnettomuuksista ja inhimillisestä hädästä - ja ansaita siitä työstä leipänsä.
Lopetettuaan toimittajan työt Wilder ryhtyi käsikirjoittamaan ja ohjaamaan elokuvia. Hän toi Hollywoodin elokuvamaailmaan oman erikoislaatuisen näkemyksensä elokuvantekoon. Billy Wilderin elokuvissa yhdistyvät viehkolla tavalla romantikon ja kyynikon mieli. Muut elokuvantekijät keskittyivät sankaruuteen ja tunteiluun, mutta Wilderin tavaramerkiksi muodostuivat kaikenkarvaiset myyntimiehet, onnenonkijat ja lurjukset. Mystisellä tavalla Wilder sai katsojan tuntemaan myötätuntoa suurinta lurjusta, rapajuoppoa tai täydellistä petturia kohtaan. Hänen tyylinään oli tuoda valkokankaalle karheita ja yllättäviä tyyppejä. Legendaarinen Billy Wilder oli yksi Hollywoodin suurimmista ohjaajasta, jonka yli 50 elokuvasta muistamme mm melodraaman Sunset Boulevard. Kuuden Oscarin haltijan muotokuva sisältää mm ennen näkemätöntä materiaalia Wilderin omista arkistoista. Dokumentissa Billy Wilder kertoo myös suhteestaan elokuvamaailman suuriin diivoihin kuten Marilyn Monroeen.

On acting: He [Billy Wilder] said each frame, each scene that you do, must have some dramatic explosion some astonishing things about it. Otherwise he said, it falls down. 1 said how about if 1 build to that? He said no, forget about building. Building is for architects.

But in we went. All the women going in and out accepted us, they just thought that we were extras or bit players, doing a film, a period piece in which we would be dressed in these costumes....
