Part 3. NEW WAVES OF ENERGY

Could mankind at some point have access to a new kind of energy source, non-polluting and inexhaustible? Fusion energy is not considered renewable, but nuclear energy, even though the Sun’s energy is based on the fusion reaction. The onslaught of this non-polluting, ever-lasting form of energy has been on the horizon for a long time, but will it finally become true with the new ITER test reactor?

One of the stumbling stones of large-scale, non-polluting hydrogen economy has been the fact that hydrogen is only a way to store energy. Iceland wants to be the world’s first hydrogen economy, and they produce hydrogen with hydropower and geothermal power. But now Swedish scientist claim they can produce hydrogen easily with artificial photosynthesis, by microbiological methods. Will we soon see a new era of bio-hydrogen technology?

At the moment, the biggest buzz in the energy sector is around different sea-based energy forms. Especially the North Sea countries boast several pilot projects aiming to harness wave energy and sea currents. The race is very tight. Who will be the first one to make a commercial breakthrough: Archimedes Wave Swing, Blue Concept, Buldra, Exim, Ocean Wavemaster, OWEC, Pelamis, SeaGen, Stingray, TidEl, WaveDragon, Wavegen, WavePlane or maybe WaveStar?
