Hydrogen gas and energy conservation

Traffic is a significant cause of CO2 emissions and the biggest culprit behind the constant increasing of the total energy consumption. In addition to finding new energy sources for heating and electricity production, we should also address energy sources in transportation. According to EU goals, biofuels should account for 5.75% of transportation total energy consumption by 2010.

However, many long-term strategies consider biofuels only a transitional phase before going over to hydrogen economy. There are hydrogen-powered buses already in 10 European cities, such as Stockholm, Hamburg and Reykjavik. These buses enable studies on the suitability of hydrogen to be used extensively in transportation.

Hydrogen can be used as the fuel for a combustion engine or a fuel cell. Hydrogen is highly flammable, so it cannot be used in a regular combustion engine.
