Bulletin from YLE Current Affairs
YLE TV2’s programme Silminnäkijä (Eye Witness) of 28 September 2009 dealt with the activity of the Youth Housing Foundation Nuorisosäätiö. According to the source that had provided information for the programme, a construction company contracting for the Foundation paid a bill for building material used in Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen’s house project.
In his press conference, Matti Vanhanen asked for further details from YLE. We confirm that the information presented in the programme comes from a reliable source. Because the information was provided referring to the right to source protection, we shall not disclose the source. The source has given us a written agreement that, if necessary, he or she can testify in the matter under oath in a court of law.
In his press conference, PM Matti Vanhanen referred to a small quantity of unbarked birch. We confirm that our source has given information on another quantity of building material. Vanhanen also wondered why a representative of TV2 was not present to give evidence. However, the event was Vanhanen’s own press conference, to which our representative had not been specially asked to reply to questions about the programme.
The programme has been in the making for a long time. All interviews had been made before news about the Foundation’s campaign funding was unveiled. Rather than focusing on campaign funding, the programme sought to open the mechanism through which the Foundation has grown into a major player in the rented housing market.
We have told all essential details in the programme.
Because the National Bureau of Investigation has opened an investigation in the matter, our editorial staff has nothing to add.
