Oscar Goodman on oikeussaliuhkapelurina kunnioitettu ja jopa pelätty vastustaja. Las Vegasiin on palkattu kolme syyttäjää lisää vain Oscaria vastaan. Rikolliset kunnioittavat asianajajaa niin paljon, ettei Goodmanin perheen tarvitse kaupungissa pelätä henkensä puolesta. "Minä olen ainoa vaimon ja lasten lisäksi, joka puolustaa syytettyä. Minä olen ainoa, joka takaan, että valtiovalta ei pysty rikkomaan asiakkaideni perustuslaillisia oikeuksia", puuskahtaa Goodman upeassa toimistossaan.

Asiakkaat kehuvat kilvan, kuinka monta kymmentä kertaa he ovat kävelleet vapauteen tuomarin voimatta asialle mitään. Palkkioista ei puhuta, mutta kuvat Goodmanin kodista puhuvat puolestaan. FBI ei ole voinut mitään, vaikka kaikkea on yritetty nauhoituksista ja valepuvuista lähtien.

Oscar Goodmanin yksi kuuluisimmista asiakkaista oli juuri Tony Spilotro, jota syytettiin ruuvipenkkikidutuksen lisäksi 25 murhasta. Myöhemmin Spilotro hakattiin tajuttomaksi ja haudattiin elävältä. Goodmanin mielestä Spilotro oli herrasmies ja Goodman antaisikin tyttärensä seurustella mieluummin gansterin kuin agentin kanssa.

Oscar Goodman on tuttu valkokankaalta, kun hän näytteli omaa itseään elokuvassa Casino. Martin Scorsesen vuonna 1995 ohjaaman elokuvan tähtinä olivat Robert De Niro näytellen Frank Rosenthalia, yhtä Goodmanin gangsteriasiakkaista, joka kehitti uudenlaisen vedonlyöntijärjestelmän. Naispääosassa vaikutti Sharon Stone.

Ohjaaja ja dokumentin käsikirjoittaja Paul Wilmshurst on erikoistunut vaikeiden ja ristiriitaisia ajatuksia herättävien ihmisten kuvaamiseen. Hän on tehnyt henkilökuvan mm. feministikirjailijana tunnetusta Germaine Greer'stä. Wilmshurst seurasi kaksi vuotta Oscar Goodmania voittaen tämän luottamuksen. Kolmen henkilön ryhmä aloitti kuvaukset syyskuussa 1997. Elokuva on myös nostalginen katsaus erämaan kaupunkiin, joka 25 vuodessa on kasvanut 70 000 ihmisen kaupungista 1 200 000 ihmisen ympärivuorokautiseksi peliluolaksi.

MOB LAW

Goodman has done his bit in court for almost every important Mafia boss over the past 25 years. He played himself In the Martin Scorsese movie Casino, as the lawyer for two central mobsters, Tony "the Ant" Spilotro and Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal.

Mob Law is a film portrait of Goodman, exploring his life and career as a mob lawyer, featuring interviews, meetings and confrontations with his friends clients and opponents,

Goodman plays off and is proud of his Mafia connections. At the same time, he makes out chat the Mafia does not exist. He reveres the old days when Vegas was run by the mob. He jokes that his clients have only ever committed the crime of having vowels at the end of their names. Vegas police and FBI hate him. He, in turn, says he hates informers and rats.

He works out of plush offices in downtown Vegas, grandiosely furnished with marble floors, mahogany desks and crystal chandeliers. His office is lined with photographs of his clients. Meyer Lansy, Tony Spilotro, Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, Jimmy Chagra, Micky Scarfo and Philip Leonetti.

Mob law offers a rounded and dramatic portrait of Goodman: in the office holding client meetings, walking over for a court appearance, attending synagogue, having dinners with his wife, hosting a party for a Tyson referee in a topless bar, and journeying back to Philadelphia to explore his roots.

The film climaxes with a face-to-face confrontation in the desert between Oscar and Baken, the FBI agent who infiltrated Tony Spilotro's confidence and went to Oscar's office wearing a wire, hoping to entrap him. They argue about the morality of their lives and work, at times nearly coming to blows. The FBI agent ends up quoting the Old Testament, while Goodman accuses the FBI of framing and lying to achieve convictions.
