Gwen Wells oli ennen sairastumistaan syöpään tunnettu näyttelijä ja seurapiirieläjä. Hän ystävystyi dokumentaristi Donna Deitcin kanssa 80-luvun puolivälissä heidän esiintyessään samassa elokuvassa.Gwen Wells tunnettiin aiemmin itsetuhoisena huumeiden väärinkäyttäjänä,mutta kun hän vuonna 1992 sairastui hän sai elämänhalunsa takaisin ja alkoi taistella kuolemaa vastaan.

ANGEL ON MY SHOULDER
Gwen Wells was a young actress well known to film audience primarily for her exquisite performance in Robert Altman's classic film Nashville (1974). Filmmaker Donna Deitch met Gwen Wells in the mid 1980s when she cast her in a small role in her debut feature film, Desert Hearts.In 1992, at the age of only 42, Gwen developed cancer. By this time, the friendship between the two women was extremely close. Gwen allowed Donna intimately into her process- and allowed her to film her battle with the disease. In their informal sessions together with the camera, Gwen talks with extraordinary clarity and candour about her agonising choices in the face of death. Gwen's reaction to the disease of cancer was not what anyone would expect: Gwen had been a drug addict, with a long history of suicidal tendencies. and at first she viewed her cancer as a fulfilment of her suicidal fantasies. Finally, when the disease had overtaken her body, she thought as hard as anyone to survive.
In this confessional portrait, Gwen emerges as a vivid woman and unique woman, with an extremely rare capacity to share what is usually secret and private: what it feels like to die - physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It was an extraordinary gift to her friend Donna, and one that Donna, as a filmmaker, would be able to pass on to others. This searing document invites the viewer to join an intense experience, one that affirms that a crippling illness cannot silence courage nor kill friendship. It is a film experience that leaves no one unaffected.
