KUU BROADWAYN YLLÄ

Moon Over BroadwayHauska kärpäsenä katossa -dokumentti Kuu Broadwayn yllä paljastaa kulissien takaiset tapahtumat Broadway-näytelmää luotaessa. Jo hieman hiipuva tv-tähti Carol Burnett tekee paluuta teatteriin näytelmässä "Moon over Buffalo" vastanäyttelijänään Phil Bosco.

Kuvaustekniikallaan ja taitavalla leikkauksella D.A.

MOON OVER BROADWAY

Moon Over BroadwayThe new film of D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus is a fresh, eye-opening, no-holds-barred look at the big bang adventure of producing a Broadway hit.

Holed up in a downtown loft, the Queen of Comedy herself - Carol Burnett - and Broadway veteran Philip Bosco begin rehearsals on a new farce by Kevin Ludwig (Lend Me a Tenor, Crazy For You). Ken wonders in Carol, TVīs most beloved star, is quite the lead he's written for. Carol wonders if her return to the Broadway stage after 30 years of television isn't too much of a gamble as she, Phil and the troupe strumble and grumble through a blizzard of rewrites. They feel their input as comedic actors is continually ignored. "This play is not going to be improved, " declares director Tom Moore. "The pact you make with the devil in the modern theatre" , Ken complains to the producers, "is that you need a star to sell tickets...it will never be the play I wrote". Stage show producers Elizabeth Williams and Rocco Landesman don't disagree: "You are living in 1995. We have two and a half million dollars worth of show...reality check."

For actors it's a new version of the show every night and for the producers it's not only counting the house but the laughs as well. The frantic and frenetic rewriting takes its toll on Ken, pushing him to the verge of total collapse. All the while the producers are discussing the hiring of a joke doctor from Long Island who turns out to be a dentist. A Ricco quips on the eve of the New York opening, "it wouldn't be any fan if you couldn't be humiliated and embarrassed...It's that possibility, that risk of total mortification and degradation, that you're always trying to escape from and what a joy is when you do."

Only those few who have been lucky enough to glimpse behing the stage curtain have seen Broadway quite like this.
