LAITAKAUPUNGIN MACBETH

Duncan on laitakaupungin "kummisetä", joka on menettämässä otettaan. Macbethille ennustetaan, että hänestä tulee johtaja ja vaimonsa yllyttämänä Macbeth surmaa Duncanin. Valloilleen päässyt väkivallan ja petosten ketju johtaa lopulta Macbethin täydelliseen tuhoon.

Laitakaupungin Macbeth (Macbeth on the Estate) on tarina vallanhimosta ja rakkaudesta, aivan kuten alkuperäinenkin tarina. Ohjaaja Penny Woolcockille oli luonnollista edetä näytelmään, sillä vuonna 1995 hän teki yhteistyötä ohjaaja Michael Bogdanovin kanssa palkitussa dokumentissa Shakespeare on the Estate. James Frain, joka näyttelee Macbethiä, ei voi kuvitella näytelmää mihinkään muuhun ympäristöön. "Tämä vain tuntuu toimivan niin hyvin."

MACBETH ON THE ESTATE

Macbeth is brought to contemporary urban Britain, in a community dominated by drug culture and gang warfare, where order is imposed by violence - baseball bats and bars. The play was a logical progression for the director, who in 1995, collaborated with theatre director Michael Bogdanov in the award-winning documentary Shakespeare on Estate. For that documentary Woolcock filmed Bogdanov as he cajoled residents of the Ladywood estate, who knew little about Shakespeare and cared even less, to act roles from a selection of his play. The idea was a huge success and this full length performance has proved a remarkable progression of the work.

For James Frain, who plays MachMacbethbeth as a crack-addicted thug, the setting is so convincing that, he say, "I can't imagine Macbeth being set anywhere else now. The idea of it having cloaks and beards and people wandering around medieval castles seems incredibly odd. This just seems to work so well".
