TAIVASTA VASTEN
Taivasta vasten on elokuva Kirgistanin elokuvakaravaaneista: menneisyyden neuvostopropagandasta ja tämän päivän amerikkalaisista toimintaelokuvista. Taustalla on maan oma taru Manaksesta, pelastajasta.
Neuvostoliitto kehitti Kirgistaniin propagandatarkoituksiaan varten ainutlaatuisen Nomadic Cineman, jossa autoilla ja hevoskaravaaneilla vietiin propagandaelokuvia jylhissä vuoristomaisemissa paimentolaiskyliin katsottaviksi. Neuvostojärjestelmän romahdettua tämä erikoinen elokuvakulttuuri säilyi hengissä itsenäistyneessa Kirgiisiassa muutaman vuoden pysähdyksestä huolimatta. Neuvostoelokuvat vaihtuivat Hollywoodin b-luokan väkivaltaelokuviin.
Koneenkäyttäjäkaksikon vanhempi ammattilainen, Zarylbeck, kaipaa neuvostojärjestelmää, kun taas nuorempi, Murat, on toisen ajan kasvatti.
Päähahmojen kautta dokumentti kertoo elokuvasta propagandan välineena, sen mahtavasta manipulaatiovoimasta ja tavasta toimia eri kulttuurien viestin viejänä. Taivasta vasten kertoo myös, kuinka kulttuuriltaan voimakas yhteisö voi säilyttää identiteettinsä manipuloinin silmässä vahvojen juuriensa ansiosta.
"Tähtien karavaani" kulkee eteenpäin eeppisessä vuoristomaisemassa ja näyttää monimuotoisen paimentolaiskulttuurin kaikessa rikkaudessaan Kirgiisian kansallissankarin, Manaksen, vaikuttaessa kaikkeen.

THE STAR'S CARAVAN
Kyrgyzystan used to be a part of the Soviet Union and Communism was the dominant ideology. In their efforts to spread this ideology, the Russians used propaganda films that were shown to the Kyrgyz nomads by itinerant projectionists. For the nomads, this was often the only contact they had with art and the culture, making the travelling cinema very dear to them.
Zarylbeck and Murat are two old-school operators, who are forced to passively watch society change and their work become less appreciated. Their experiences are juxtaposed with other developments in preset-day Kyrgyzstan, such as the the celebration of the thousandth anniversary of the national hero Manas, about whose life a feature film has been made. Sequences from this epic film are playfully interjected throughout this documentary. With the downfall of Communism, the Islamic profession of faith has been revived. And in the political sphere, the new government is harassed by heavily armed terrorists who prowl around the border regions.
In an expressive and often poetic manner, The Star's Caravan shows the countless sweeping changes in this former Soviet republic. Western influences and traditional attainments intermingle and the future looks uncertain. The only steady point on recognition is Manas, the invincible mythical hero who still makes every Kyrgyz's heart quicken.
