TELOITUS

Hollantilainen Jaap van Hoewikj kuuli tapahtuman suorana radiolähetyksenä. Hän kuuli myös, että teloitusta oli seuraamassa 50 todistajaa. Keitä olivat nämä henkilöt, mitkä olivat heidän motiivinsa, miksi he olivat todistamassa teloitusta. van Hoewikj yritti löytää näitä ihmisiä, mutta vankilaviranomaiset eivät antaneet heidän nimiään. Vuosien yrittämisen jälkeen ohjaaja alkoi löytää silminnäkijöitä ja haastatteli heitä.

Teloitusta oli ollut seuraamassa viralliset tahot: oikeuslaitoksen ja vankilan edustajat, kaksi lääkärit ja pappi. Mukana oli tuomitun surmaaman nuorukaisen omaisia. Myös tuomitun veli ja serkku olivat paikalla. Teloitus oli samalla suuri mediatapahtuma. Lehdistöpaikkoja oli vähän, ja niistä oltiin näyty kovaa taistelua. Vankilan ulkopuolelle amerikkalaiset tevevisioyhtiöt olivat pystytäneet omat antenninsa välittääkseen teloituksen niin suorana kuin mahdollista. Kuvaajia ei päästetty mukaan aitiopaikalle.

Läsnäolijoiden kertomukset ovat erilaisia. Jokainen näki teloituksen omista lähtökohdistaan. Viranomaisille se merkitsi oikeuden täytäntöönpanoa, tuomitun surmaaman pojan omaisille se antoi vapauttavan tunteen. VIP-henkilöt kokivat läsnäolon suurena etuoikeutena, olihan kyseessä ensimmäinen teloitus 25 vuoteen. Surmatun pojan isä onnistui nostamaan poliittista profiiliaan ja pääsi kuvernöörin työtoveriksi. Jokainen todistaja oli myös vastatusten itsensä kanssa. Joku tunsi olleensa lähellä kuolemaan, jonne Robert Alton Harris matkasi, mutta muut pelastuivat. Kaikki olivat nähneet kasukammion kuvissa tai Disneylandissa. Nyt se näytti modernilta, mutta samalla keskiaikaiselta kidituskammiolta.

Teloitus on tehty tavalla, joka koskettaa ihmisen syviä tuntemuksia. Se on kurinalainen, tehokas, mutta vetoaa myös ihmisten tirkistelyviettiin.

That is how radio report ended on 21 April 1992.

Executions in the United States are apparently a spectator event. A Roman arena in the "Sunshine State". Who were these 49 witnesses? Why were they there and what had they seen?

There are plenty of films and books about men on death row and their executions. But there was nothing to be found on the people who watched such an event. The identity of the witnesses turned out to constitute "classified information" and no cooperation was to be expected from the Justice Department. Yet two years later a significant number of witnesses had agreed to cooperate on the film.

Procedure 769 is the document that lays down how a prisoner is to be executed. For the first time in 25 years, the procedure was again followed in California. On April 21, 1992 just before 6 am, Robert Harris stepped into the gas chamber, illuminated by bright green light. He could see the audience through the thick glass: his brother, a few friends, but also relatives of his victims. There were witnesses on behalf of the state, reporters amd even several VIPs.

The prison director stood behind the gas chamber and stared the prisoner straight in the eyes when he pulled the handle. All wittnesses had a valid reason to watch. For one it was a democratic duty, another wanted to see justice done, some wanted to help the prisoner in the last few moments of his life.

They all looked at the same thing: a dying man. Yet each saw different things happen. The observation of each was very subjective, resulting from their connection to the condemned man and partly influenced by media attention focused on Harris in the fourteen years prior to his execution.
