LÄNSIMAISEN IHMISEN MUOTOKUVA
Tietyt asiat ovat meille niin tuttuja, että ne tuntuvat olleen olemassa aina, muuttumattomina: valtiot, lait, uskonnot. Emme enää edes kyseenalaista näiden itsestäänselvyyksien alkuperää, eri kulttuurien, instituutioiden, tapojen, seremonioiden...Länsimaisen ihmisen muotokuva perustuu ranskalaisen antropologin, Pierre Legendren, tutkimuksiin. Dokumentti vie meidät kiehtovalle matkalle tämän päivän vahvimpien instituutioiden yhtimeen: Vatikaaniin, armeijaan, nuorten ja lasten turvakotiin, sairaalaan, monikansalliseen yritykseen, koulutuslaitokseen. Jokaisesta instituutiosta on oma tarinansa.
Ideale Audiencen yhdessä La Septin kanssa tuottamassa dokumentissa pureudutaan myös ihmiseen yksilönä organisaatioiden ja instituutioiden luomassa länsimaisessa ympäristössä. Yksilön ja yhteiskunnan kahtiajako paljastaa olosuhteet, joiden puitteissa ihminen inhimillistyy. Ohjelmassa lähestytään ihmistä kuin muukalaista ja paljastetaan näkökulmia inhimiliisyyteen, joita me emme enää näe.
Gérald Caillatin ohjaamassa täyspitkässä dokumentissa on kuvallisesti hallittu kokonaisuus. Metaforat ja esimerkit muun muassa paavin vierailusta, lastenkodin organisaatiosta, balettikoulusta ja sydänsiirto-operaatiosta tekevät dokumentista helposti seurattavan ja ymmärrettävän, vaikka se kertookin nykyihmisen tiedostamattomista juurista.

This film approaches man as though he were a stranger, and reveals the anthropological backdrop to humanity that we no longer seeIts structure provides a view of institutions in cross-section: the course of life, the theatre of society, and the so-often forgotten fact that the world is organized according to the principles of genealogy.
The Fashion of Western Man is a feature documentary that resolutely departs from the individual/society dichotomy to reveal the conditions under which man is humanized, what holds him together.
Each sequence deals with a story that exemplifies the institution in which we are filming: the building of the Papal Audience Chamber in the Vatican, the military preparations for the Bastille Day parade, an infamous terrorist attack that is tantamount to a parricide, a juvenile half-way house, the Paris Opera ballet school, a multinational corporation's annual convention, a heart transplant.
The commentary steers clear of sociological and behaviorist clichés. It allows the viewer to grasp the coherence of the excursion. Religion, Power, Justice, Education, Culture, Management, and Science: all these themes are dealt with, not to desacralize them, to use an overly fashionable term, but to comprehend what they tell us of the phenomenon of life for humanity.
