BARBARA JA MUUT POJAT

Dokumentin päähenkilö, kaunis ja karismaattinen Barbara, on Norsunluurannikon transvestiittien järjestön puheenjohtaja. Hänen tehtävänään on auttaa ihmisiä hyväksymään ja ymmärtämään erilaisuutta. Barbara johdattaa norsunluurannikkolaisten homoseksuaalien ja transvestiittien maailmaan omalla eläväisellä tyylillään.

Dokumentissa tavataan myös muun muassa Jean Jacques, Laurent, Bibiche ja Tatiana sekä Vincent ja Avelido, jotka ovat syvästi rakastuneita toisiinsa. Dokumentin henkilöt kertovat omat tarinansa; ilonsa ja surunsa. Heidän seurassaan pääsemme tutustumaan nykyajan norsunluurannikkolaiseen yhteiskuntaan, joka ei ole jakautunut vain hetero- ja homoseksuaaleihin. Dokumentissa selvitetään ero woubin ja yossin välillä. Woubi on pariskunnan "nainen" ja yossi "mies", joka on biseksuaali. Heidän edustamallaan kulttuurilla on myös vastustajansa.

Yhteisöllisyys on monelle tavoittelemisen arvoinen ja hankalakin asia. Ihminen luo tarvittaessa oman perheen, jossa hänet hyväksytään omana itsenään.

Homosexuality in Africa has long been thought of as a white man's disease. No one has even dared on think about lesbianism. Anthropologists, western andand African, hardly touched upon the subject, leaving it to be mentioned in various diaries like those on early Portuguese explorers visiting the Royal palaces in Angola or by the late 19th century Britisch diplomat Roger Casement in the Black Diaries.

Homosexuality in Africa remains a theme that is doubly provocative because it is a taboo in two levels: Africans find questions of homosexuality too intimate to be addressed and homosexuality, lived without complexes but without transparency, can't be in its western definition. The "developed world" too often sees homosexuality as a stain, connected to the sophistication of its culture and its own decadence. This double fear has fed the fears on both sides but also evacuated all communication about the subject. The appearance on AIDS makes this lack of communication even more intolerable and the search for a way talking about and presenting notions of sexuality which fall outside of western definitions all the more urgent and necessary.

This journey through Gay Africa will reveal the incredible range of gay identities and histories in Africa.
