Chuck Workmanin ohjaama ja käsikirjoittama elokuva Hipit ja muut beatnikit (The Source) alkaa aikansa kuuluisimpien vastakulttuurin edustajien, Allen Ginsbergin, Jack Kerouacin ja Willian Burroughsin tapaamisesta New Yorkissa 1944. Siitä lähdetään vuoristoratamaisen vauhdikkaalle matkalle halki 50-luvun kansainvälisen boheemielämän, San Franciscon ja Yhdysvaltojen renessanssin ja 60- ja 70-lukujen hippiliikkeen yltäen tähän päivään. Kuvituksena on arkistomateriaaleja, haastatteluja, otteita elokuvista, yleisötilaisuuksista, luennoista ja tv-ohjelmista.
Yhtenä runkona Workman käyttää vanhoja valokuvia elokuvan alusta asti, kun Ginsberg selailee pitkässä kamera-ajossa valokuva-albumiaan. "Valokuvien avulla sain esiteltyä kaikki tärkeimmät vaikuttajat", kertoo Workman. "Käytän myös todellisuutta kertomaan tarinaa, sillä tosiasia on, että Ginsberg valokuvasi innokkaasti koko elämänsä ajan."
Kolmen vuoden aikana kuvatussa elokuvassa on myös fiktiivisiä jaksoja. Niissä Dennis Hopper esittää Williams Burroughsia (1914-1997), John Turturro Allen Ginsbergia (1926-1997) ja Johnny Depp Jack Kerouacia (1922-1969).
Elokuva on kuvaus hippien ja beatnikien tärkeästä roolista naisten, homojen ja vähemmistöjen puolesta puhujina unohtamatta heidän vaikutustaan taiteessa, politiikassa, populaarikulttuurissa ja jokapäiväisessä elämässä.

THE SOURCE
The Source is a comprehensive documentary on the Beats and the Beat Generation, beginning with the meeting of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and William Burroughs in the Forties, and spanning international bohemian life of the Fifties, the San Francisco and West Coast renaissance, the hippie and political and spiritual movements of the Sixties and Seventies, and the important and inevitable presence of the Beat influence today. Three years in the making, the film will be the most comprehensive portrait to date of the counterculture of the past fifty years and its enormous effect on art, politics, gay and women's rights, minority rights, increased awareness, popular culture, and everyday life.
The film features new interviews with virtually all the surviving major figures from this area - including, before then- deaths, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Timothy Leary, and extensive archival material featuring Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady. Other individuals featured include Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael McClure, Ken Kesey, Gregory Corso, Ed Sanders,b, Jerry Garcia, Ray Manzarek, the poets Gary Snyder and Robert Creeley, Phillip Glass, David Amram, and several others.
Film and video from over one hundred archival and popular sources are blended into this historical survey. The film also will feature dramatized performances from the work of Ginsberg, Kerouac, and Burroughs performed by John Turturro, Johnny Depp, and Dennis Hopper.
Music plays a major part in this story. Many of the Beats had close relationships with artists like Charlie Parker, Gillespie, Monk, the Doors, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, Ornette Coleman, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Laurie Anderson, and many others. The music chosen reflects and comments oil this important relationship, from jazz to folk and traditional and progressive rock- to classical and contemporary music.
