VIHOLLISEN LEIVISSÄ
Englantilainen BBC2 on tuottanut kokonaisen sarjan kansalaistensa intiimejä intohimojen ja ennakkoluulojen värittämiä tarinoita. United Kingdom -sarjan dokumenteille on yhteistä koskettavuus, suoruus ja humoristinen näkökulma. Vihollisen leivissä on perusasetelmiltaan ajankohtaistakin ajankohtaisempi, kosketteleehan se työttömyyttä ja sen kehimiä ongelmavyyhtejä.
35-vuotias Kevin yorkshireläisesta Hullin kaupungista, Koillis-Englannista, ei ole päivääkään ollut kiinteässä työsuhteessa missään. Hallitus on kaavaillut Kevinin kaltaisille kansalaisille ’’Projektia’’. Suunnitelmissa on saada pitkäaikaistyöttömät takaisin työelämään. Saadakseen edelleen viikoittaisen työttömyysavustuksensa Kevinin on osallistuttava tähän peliin.
Peliä pelataan korkeilla panoksilla. Jos Kevin menee mukaan syvästi inhoamaansa järjestelmään hän on pian siitä riippuvainen. Ollako vai eikö olla? Siinä kysymys, johon Keviniltä odotetaan vastausta. Painostusta tulee Kevinin 19-vuotiaan tyttöystävän taholta. Tyttöystävä, Robbie, työskentelee nälkäpalkalla ompelimossa, joten Kevinin ansioille löytyisi pariskunnan arjessa enemmän kuin käyttöä. Lisäksi Robbiella on riittävästi omiakin ongelmia. Hän käyttää metadonia päästäkseen eroon heroiiinikierteestä.

WORKING FOR THE ENEMY
Thirty-five-year-old Kevin has never held a steady job in his life. The Government has a plan for people like Kevin called "Project Work". This pilot scheme, introduced by the Conservatives to get the long-term unemployed back to work, has recently been launched in Hull where Kevin lives. If Kevin wishes to continue receiving his dole cheque of £48 per week, he will have to play the game and learn how to work.The game, however, has very high stakes. If he confirms, then he is supporting the system he despises and will find himself on what he sees as the slippery slope to subservience. His 19-year-old girlfriend, Robbie, works as a seamstress for £70 a week. She wishes he would get a job and thus contribute more to their escapist habits, let alone pay for the new clothes she wants. Robbie has other problems: a reformed heroin addict from a troubled family, she relies on Kevin to keep her own addictive tendencies in check.
They are faced with planning a future together with no money, no job and no prospects. Can Kevin harness his creativity as an artist to provide a future for them and remain true to his cause never to work for the enemy?
