KOHTALON LAPSET
Vuonna 1961 Angela asui perheineen Palermon köyhimmässä slummissa Cortile Cascinossa. Tällöin nuorella Angelalla oli kolme pientä lasta, ja myöhemmin hän sai yhtä monta lisää. Elämä slummissa oli jatkuvaa taistelua köyhyyttä ja kurjuutta vastaan väkivallan ja rikosten varjossa. 30 vuotta myöhemmin Cortile Cascinoa ei enää ole, mutta onko mikään muu muuttunut?Robert Young ja Michael Roemer tekivät vuonna 1961 dokumenttielokuvan Cortile Cascino - elämästä Palermon slummissa, jonka keskushenkilöksi nousi Angela. Kolmekymmentä vuotta myöhemmin Young palasi Sisiliaan poikansa Andrewin ja miniänsä Susan Toddin kanssa ottaakseen selvää mitä Angelalle kuuluu. Kohtalon lapset -dokumentti (Children of Fate - Life And Death in a Sicilian Family) punoutuu näistä kahdesta ajasta, menneestä ja nykyisyydestä, seuraten sisilialaista elämää ja kuolemaa kolmen polven ajan. Näin syntyi harvinaislaatuinen dokumentti, joka Angelan perheen kohtaloiden lisäksi kertoo ihmisten halusta elää. Dokumentti on palkittu Sundance elokuvafestivaaleilla 1993.

CHILDREN OF FATE
Children of Fate is a dramatic story about life and death in a Sician family. The film follows one family over three generations. The film is heart-wrenching depiction of the difficalty of escaping the fate dictated by one's origins.Thirty years ago Robert Young and Michael Roemer made a searing documentary about the severe social conditions in Cortile Cascino, a slum in Palermo. Shooting in black and white, they focused their cameras on one family, at the heart of which was Angela, a mother of enormous courage struggling to help her family survive amidst poverty, violence and crime. The resultant documentary, called Cortillo Cascino was deemed "too powerfull" for American television audiences.
Curious about what had become of Angela and her family, Young returned to Sicily thirty years later, with his son and daughter-in-law (Andrew Young and Susan Todd) and they decided to make a new film Children of Fate, interweaving the 1961 footage with the new color footage in 1991.
