KUILUN PARTAALLA
Unkarilaisen ohjaajan Peter Forgácsin historiallisten dokumenttien sarja jatkuu palkitulla dokumentilla Kuilun partaalla (Az örvény). Se kertoo Unkarin juutalaisyhteisön kohtalosta natsimiehityksen aikana ja perustuu yksityiseen, yhteisössä eläneen György Peton kuvaamaan filmimateriaaliin vuosina 1938-44.Kun kaikki juutalaiset katosivat natsien miehittämistä maista, oli Unkarin juutalainen yhteisö koskematon vielä keväällä 1944. Miten se on mahdollista ja mitä tapahtui juutalaisille valtiossa, joka oli Hitlerin kolmannen valtakunnan uskollinen liittolainen aina toisen maailmansodan alusta lähtien?
Kuilun partaalla on kuvattu unkarilaisen juutalaisyhteisön asukkaiden näkökulmasta. Dokumentti välittää yhteisön tuntemuksia elintilan jatkuvasta kaventumisesta, turvallisuudentunteen vähittäisestä katoamisesta ja toivosta, jota yhteisössä ei koskaan menetetty.
Dokumentissa kuvataan harvinaisen intiimillä tavalla vääjäämätöntä tapahtumien ketjua juutalaisyhteisössä ja sitä, miten putoaminen kuiluun lopulta tapahtui.
Az örvény -dokumentti on palkittu Marseillen Vue sur les docs -festivaaleilla Grand Prix -palkinnolla sekä Prix image de la culture -palkinnolla 1997. Lisäksi dokumentti voitti samana vuonna Berliinissä Prix Europa -palkinnon ja Leipzigissa Fipresci -palkinnon.

is a private film-video opera , composed on these private film images, with the unique music of Tibor Szamzo.

When all Jews of Nazi occupied Europe vanished, the Hungarian Jewish community was still intact in the early spring of 1944.
