SUOMI-KARJAN ANTIBIOOTTIKUURI

Dokumentissa eletään vuodenkierto talvesta talveen. Ikänsä elukoiden kanssa työskennellyt Hilda jää eläkkeelle, eikä Salomaan tilalle ole jatkajaa. Piilolassa ja Purolassa tilanpito jatkuu, mutta kaiken yllä leijuu epävarmuus EY-sopimuksen lopullisesta vaikutuksesta suomalaiseen maatalouteen.

Suomi-karjan antibioottikuuri osoittaa maaseutukulttuurin rikkauden. Elämän ja kuoleman dialektiikka tiloilla on väkevää, ja kaiken yllä rehottaa absurdi ja lämmin huumori. Maaseudulla on muitakin arvoja kuin maitolitran tuottajahinta.

EY-integraatio etenee vääjäämättömästi. Kuin juna. Kansalle tarjotaan neuvoa-antavan äänestyksen mahdollisuutta. Tanskan esimerkistä tiedetään, että äänestys voidaan tarvittaessa uusia. Riittävän monta kertaa.

HILDA GOES EUROPE

The farming conditions in Sotkamo are hard: winter starts on early October and goes on till late March. The growing season is short, lasting an average of 143 days. Farmers support themselves on their small farms by raising cattle; the circumstances are far too harsh for growing crops.

The film follows the cycle of seasons as experienced on three farms. Hilda is a loner from the backwoods who has to do away with her animals upon retirement. The farmer and his wife at Piilola are in their prime. The head of the family would like to believe in agriculture, but the EU negotiations threaten to jeopardize the farmer's future.Jari and Tarja are just starting out. Their time is taken with learning the trade and their family keeps growing.

Uncertainly throws a shadow over all of them. Finland is entering into the European Union and the export industries are setting the pace. The government pushes for membership and Ministers placate the farmers with empty promises. Arctic agriculture is being crushed under the tread of the market economy.
