THE LAST CIGARETTE
The Last cigarette is a feature documentary made entirely from archival or "found" footage. Since there is no narration this means that the story must be told without the use of either a camera or a microphone.Like the 1982 film The Atomic Café by Kevin Rafferty, making a film like The Last Cigarette required, at first, a cautious and respectful approach to the material: not unlike building a house entirely from materials found in a junkyard.
The Last Cigarette looks at he mysterious appeal of tobacco, its mythology and cultural significance in history in order to understand this appeal. The Last Cigarette examines how we got from there to here and casts a satirical eye on the notably uncivilized tactics employed by both sides in today's tobacco wars.
A compilation of Hollywood clips, vintage cigarette commercials, anti-smoking scare-films, Congressional battle-footage, smoking esoterica and much more, the film was created from a vast panorama of archival material.
The Last Cigarette into smoking what The Atomic Café was to the nuclear warfare: an entertaining and irreverent exploration of a deadly subject.
