Energy from the Sun

During one our, the Earth catches more energy from the Sun than the whole humankind consumes in one year. Solar energy can be harvested either passively or actively. Passive harvesting means using the light and heat from the Sun directly, without any equipment. In active harvesting, the solar rays are transformed into electricity by solar panels or into heat with solar collectors. In Finland, use of solar energy is still marginal, and the most common uses are at summer cottages, boats and caravans.

The leading European users of solar energy are Germany, Greece and Austria. The EU has set a goal of 100 million square metres of collector surface by 2010.
In Finland, the annual sun radiation amounts up to 1,000 kWh/m². If all radiation could be put to use, an area of 20 – 30 m² would be enough to heat one single-family house for a year.
