Finlandia Hall

The last stage is about to begin. Now that the finalists have been announced, the pace has really been stepped up. The results of the semi-finals were phoned straight to the Sibelius Academy foyer, where Annica, the other competition secretary, and I were waiting with the other contestants in Helsinki.

Another step forwards…

I can’t believe we’ll be hearing the names of the finalists tonight. It seems incredible that the competition’s going so fast. We came back to Helsinki from Jyväskylä on the early train this morning. Everything had gone well for our cheerful party in Jyväskylä. I’d also had a good time with them myself – it was great getting to know these four different personalities!

Out in the provinces

Yesterday was a blogless day because I wasn’t in the competition office. But: yesterday the competition scattered all over Finland, the office was dismantled and packed into boxes (you’d never believe it but we needed only a few boxes!) and the boxes were finally carted downstairs, where there’s now a new competition corner for contestants in Helsinki.

What a busy, exciting day!

The last day of the first round was, as was only to be expected, a mixture of laughter and tears. In the office, too. It was overshadowed from first thing in the morning by the knowledge that more than half our contestants would soon be going home. But at the same time we were tingling with excitement as the competition proceeds and the plot thickens, as it were.

If yesterday was quiet…

…today has so far had more than its fair share of hassle! Firstly, as the competition proceeds, the atmosphere is automatically heating up. Secondly, cellists keep wandering into the competition office more and more frequently, asking about tomorrow: when, where, and at what time…?

All cool, calm and collected!

Everything seems to have passed smoothly here at the office on the first day of the competition. The day has gone looking after the contestants but with a miraculous absence of panic. The organisation has gone without a hitch.

Greetings to all who are reading this and following the Paulo Cello Competition

I’ll be writing this blog for you throughout the competition. The place where I write it is right at the heart of the competition – the competition office in the Sibelius Academy Chamber Music Hall. As well as being the competition’s press officer I’m one of the competition secretaries.
