[Edited]

Sainz could win the championship at home Catalunya : Team by team analysis [21/10/03 - 00:42]
Loeb will try to take his revenge in Spain There were many unexpected events in the last World Rally Championship event in Corsica. Many drivers are still in the battle for the title, with only two rallies to go until the end of the season.
Citroën Sport Sebastien Loeb really wanted a good result at the Tour de Corse. The Frenchman was the favourite to win and with a victory the Citroën driver would have taken the lead in the championship. But Loeb went off the road in the eighth stage and lost the opportunity to score points. Sebastien Loeb will need to finish in front of Sainz, Solberg and Burns to keep his title hopes alive. Sebastien has taken part three times to the Catalunya with moderate success. The Frenchman retired in 1999 and 2002 and finished in 15th position at the wheel of a Saxo in 2001. Nevertheless, Sebastien is considered the fastest Citroën driver on asphalt and will have to confirm his status by finishing in front of his teammates.
Carlos Sainz won his home race in 1992 and 1995 and retired last year after going off the road. Unlike his rivals, Sainz doesn't have to win the event; he only needs to stay in front of his three opponents. Carlos also knows that if he wins the rally and his rivals don't finish in the points, he will clinch the title at Lloret de Mar.
Unlike his teammates, Colin McRae isn't fighting for the championship. However, the Scotsman can help his team to conquer the Constructors' Championship. Colin won twice in Spain: 1996 and 2000.
Peugeot Sport Peugeot Sport is going through a difficult period. While the Xsara and the Focus significantly improved in the last few races, the 206 seems to stay at the same level. Peugeot were expecting a lot from Gilles Panizzi for the last two asphalt events but the Frenchman had a lot of problems to find a proper set- up for his 206. Gilles was never able to find a sufficient rhythm to battle for the lead. The Peugeot driver will try to do better at the Catalunya but it will not be easy.
Last year Richard Burns finished second at the Catalunya, behind his teammate Panizzi. However this year the 206 is not as competitive and Burns will have some trouble to repeat such a result. His consistency helped him to stay near the top in the points standings but now Richard will be aiming to finish on the podium to keep his championship hopes alive.
After having a long string of retirements, Marcus Gronholm was finally able to reach the finish at the Tour de Corse. Even if Marcus has only a marginally small chance of winning the title, he can still help Peugeot in the battle against Citroën for the Constructors' Championship. Fourth in 2002, Marcus has never finished on the podium in Spain.
Subaru World Rally Team Subaru is no longer in the running for the Constructors' Championship but the team can still win the Drivers' Championship with Petter Solberg.
The Impreza was not very competitive at the Sanremo but the situation was much better at the Tour de Corse under rainy conditions. The team will obviously hope that rain is part of the Spanish event as well.
Petter Solberg finished in fifth position last year at the Catalunya. The Norwegian knows that the weather will play a major role in his ability to win the race.
Tommi Makinen will try to score as many points as possible in Spain. The Finn won the event in 1997 but did not finish the race last year.
Märtin will be aiming to win Ford Rallye Sport By making a mistake in the eighth stage of the Tour de Corse, Markko Martin blew away his last chance of winning the championship. Despite that, the Estonian is still hungry for victories and will try to succeed in Spain. Markko finished eighth last year but with the much improved Focus, he can be the most serious challenger of the Citroën drivers.
Markko Martin is not the only driver to be competitive at Ford. Francois Duval finished on the podium in Corsica and will want to repeat his performance in Spain. The Belgian took part in the Catalunya two times but never at the wheel of a WRC car (he drove a Puma).
Ford will have a third car for Mikko Hirvonen once again. The Finn will drive his usual 2002 Focus for his first participation in the Spanish event. Mikko's target will be to reach the finish, just like he did last week in Corsica.
Skoda Motorsport Didier Auriol had a frustrating weekend in Corsica. The Frenchman was not able to move past the start of the first stage, leaving all the development work of the Fabia to his teammate Toni Gardemeister.
Auriol won twice in Catalunya and Gardemeister retired last year because of an oil pressure problem on his car. The two drivers will work hard to help the team make another step forward in the development of the Fabia.

Shakedown round up: Fords to the fore Spain · Ford · Mikko Hirvonen · 23/10/2003 11:37:09
The Estonian has a stiff neck and is wearing a small neck brace - he has also had extra padding added to his seat following his high-speed off in France. But so far, that has not affected his performance in Spain, completing the 3.4km stage in 2m17.4s.
Martin was on a new compound of Michelin tyre – which he used briefly in Corsica last week. Ford says it might use the new compound at some point over the weekend.
"I would prefer to have had a full day's testing to evaluate them properly," he said. "But there is definitely something there."
Marcus Gronholm set an identical time to Martin, with Ford youngster Mikko Hirvonen third quickest.
Hirvonen remains uncertain about where his future lies in the championship and admits he might not contest all 16 rounds next season. But the Finn, who set his first fastest stage time in Corsica last week, would have done his prospects no harm whatsoever with his shakedown time.
Petter Solberg was fourth quickest followed by the third Focus of Francois Duval. The Belgian equalled his best ever WRC result last week, finishing third, but is not expecting to scale the same heights in Spain.
"This will be trickier than Corsica," said Duval. "But the good thing is there are a lot of new stages which will level the playing field a little. I hope to take advantage in the new stages."
Over at Skoda, Didier Auriol was celebrating taking the start of his 150th WRC rally, but the former world champion's team mate Toni Gardemeister was in no mood join in on the fun. The rear anti-roll bar in his Fabia broke with alarming regularity in France – and broke again during shakedown today.
"If it happens on shakedown, for sure it is going to happen on the rally," he grumbled.
