Engine boost for Fabia Italy · Skoda · Didier Auriol · 10/10/2003 12:09:46
Skoda will use a new version of its engine in the Fabia WRCs of Toni Gardemeister and Didier Auriol on Corsica.
Team chief Peter Kohoutek explained that a small improvement can be expected.
"The new specification should give better response: that's the easy part, said Kohoutek. "The harder part – getting more power - will take longer."
Auriol criticised the current unit in Sanremo, but says that apart from the engine, the Fabia is looking promising. "Everything else on the car has been good," he said. © Copyright wrc.com

Citroën one step ahead of the others ? Tour de Corse : Team by team analysis [10/10/03 - 15:15]
Sebastien Loeb will be the favourite to win ollowing the Sanremo Rally, the teams and drivers move to the French island of Corsica for the 12th round of the World Rally Championship.
Another asphalt event that has been very fruitful for the French drivers in the past. In the last 20 years, only three men were able to beat the French drivers at the Tour de Corse: Colin McRae (twice), Carlos Sainz (once) and Jesus Puras (once).
Citroën Sport The French team will be the favourite for this battle. The Xsara showed its potential in Italy in the hands of Sebastien Loeb. The Frenchman is hoping to win the three October events. Loeb won in Corsica in 2001 in the Super 1600 category, finished ninth in 2000 at the wheel of a privately entered Toyota and nineteenth in 1999 in a Saxo.
His three teammates have won the Tour de Corse at least once before. Colin McRae won twice (1997,1998) but the Scotsman also had some violent crashes there throughout the years. Now that Colin is no longer in the battle for the championship, will he be motivated enough to push his car to the limit ?
Carlos Sainz won the event in 1991. Now third in the championship, the Spaniard must have a very good result if he wants to keep his championship hopes alive.
Philippe Bugalski is a two-time winner of the Tour de Corse. The Frenchman won in 1996 and 1999 and will be ready to achieve another good result this year after taking part in his first pure asphalt race in over a year at the Sanremo last week.
Peugeot Sport Last year Peugeot crushed the competition by finishing first, second and third in the race. Things have changed since then and the 206 is no longer as dominant on asphalt. Winner in 2000 and 2002, Gilles Panizzi is one of the specialist of the French event. Gilles will be ready but the 206 will have to be more competitive than in Italy to battle for the win in Corsica.
Marcus Gronholm showed to everyone that he can be very quick on asphalt. Unfortunately, the Finn is going through a difficult period of consecutive dnf's. Marcus is no longer able to defend his title but he will do his best to bring the most points for his team.
Richard Burns had a very difficult race in Italy. The Briton was noticeably slower than his teammates but despite that he was able to score a few points to stay in the lead of the championship. For Corsica, Burns will try to get as many points as possible to be in the best position as he can for the last two rallies of the season.
Subaru World Rally Team The last rally was a hard reality check for Subaru: the Impreza was not able to keep up with the leaders. It is almost impossible for the team to make major changes in only 15 days so the goal will be to do the best result with the available package, hoping that the weather will level the playing field.
Fifth in the last two editions, Petter Solberg will be hoping to achieve a similar result this year as well. As for Tommi Makinen, this rally has never been one of his best. The four-time world champion never finished on the podium in the French event and had many accidents in the past few years there.
Another good result for Martin ? Ford Rallye Sport Ford will bring three Focus WRC for the Tour de Corse. Two 2003-spec Focus for Markko Martin and Francois Duval and one 2002-spec Focus for Mikko Hirvonen.
Ford will be counting on Markko Martin to battle for the win once again. In the last rally, the Estonian was the only driver fast enough to challenge Loeb but Corsica may be a little be more difficult for him. Martin finished in sixth place in 2001 and in eighth position in 2002. Markko prefers faster and more flowing rallies whereas the Rallye de France is mostly made up of twisty roads. But Martin proved in the past to be quick everywhere.
Francois Duval achieved a good result at the Sanremo and will be in a positive state of mind for the Tour de Corse. The Belgian took part in the French event twice before but had to retire both times.
Mikko Hirvonen will discover the Corsican roads this year. The young Finn will continue his learning process and his first target will be to finish the rally.
Skoda Motorsport Skoda are not expecting miracles from the Fabia at the Tour de Corse. It will be a little bit frustrating for the driver who has the most wins on the French island: Didier Auriol. Without a competitive car, the Frenchman cannot aim to add another win to his 6 victories. However, his experience will be invaluable for Skoda.
Toni Gardemeister likes asphalt but has never achieved a good result in Corsica. Toni finished in eleventh place in 2000 and in twelfth position in 2002. His goal will be to do better this time.

Perjantaina alkavan Korsikan MM-rallin kuumin kysymys kuuluu, jatkuuko ranskalaisen Citroen-kuljettaja Sebastien Loebin voittoputki tämän vuoden asfalttiralleissa? Loeb on ennen kauden kolmea viimeistä MM-rallia vain kahden pisteen päässä MM-sarjaa johtavasta Richard Burnsista. Sebastien Loeb taistelee tiukasti rallin MM-sarjan voitosta.
- Jos joku luulee edellisten kisojen perusteella, että MM-voitto Korsikalla on muodollisuus, hänen on syytä miettiä asiaa uudelleen. Haastajia riittää. Fordin Markko Märtin ei ollut San Remossa missään vaihteessa kaukana, Loeb muistuttaa. San Remo -rallissa Loeb vei voiton voiton ennen Peugeotin ranskalaista Gilles Panizzia, joka nousi kakkoseksi valittuaan ainoana kärkikuljettajana sateisille kahdelle viimeiselle erikoiskokeelle välikelin renkaat. Märtinin oli kolmas, mutta tulosta rasitti moottorin tietokonevian tuoma aikasakko.
- Sää voi olla merkittävässä roolissa myös Korsikalla. Viime aikoina Saksan, Australian ja San Remon MM-ralleissa kisan lopussa tullut sade on uhannut muuttaa koko kärjen järjestystä, neljättä kertaa Korsikalle lähtevä Loeb sanoo.
Loebille Korsikan rallin menestys on erittäin tärkeä. Täydellisesti luottamuksen autoonsa ja ajoonsa San Remossa menettänyt MM-sarjan kärkimies Richard Burns jäi seitsemänneksi. Se tarkoittaa, että Loeb nousi sarjassa toiseksi vain kahden pisteen päähän Peugeot-tallin brittikuljettajasta.
MM-sarjasta on ajamatta vain kolme rallia: asfaltilla ajettavat Korsikan ja Katalonian MM-rallit ovat ne kaksi kisaa, joissa Loeb on suvereeni suosikki ja joissa hän voi tehdä ratkaisevan eron Burnsiin. Kauden päättävässä Britannian rallissa Burns lienee vahvempi kuin Citroen-tallin ranskalaiskuljettaja.
