Summer Documentaries in YLE2 are favourites from the 90s . They are documentaries with strong sense of life. The films are all except one produced in Finland.


7.1. BLINDNESS (45 min)

    Documentary about a blind born young man and his attempt to solve the mystery of seeing.

    14.1.TALE OF HUMAN HEART (52 min)

  • Directors Laurence Serfaty ja Patrick Aeberhard, A France 3/Capa, France, 1997
    On December 3, 1967, Professor Christiaan Barnard, a young South African surgeon, surprised people around the globe when he performed the world's first heart transplantation. Thirty years later and some 32,000 transplants later, we meet Dr. Bernard and other transplant pioneers.

    4.2.TROUBLESOME CREEK (84 min)

  • Directors Jeanne Jordan and Steven Ascher, PBS, USA
    A Midwestern, Jeanne Jordan made a film about her parents' attempt to save their Iowa farm. This very personal film speaks to the universal problem of the fate of small farms in rural communities.

    11.2 FREE FALL (75 min)

  • Director Péter Forgács, BBSA, Hungary, 1996.
    The private history series of Péter Forgács is enriched by a 'video opera', with an unusual approach. When all Jews in Nazi occupied Europe vanished, the Hungarian Jewish community was still intact in the early spring 1944. The home movies of Mr Gyorgy Petó are the source of these times which were filmed from 1938 till 1944.

    President of Estonia since 1992, Lennart Meri is a charismatic person. Before his political career he used to be a writer and film director. He is famous for his speeches. Documentary about Lennart Meri is also describing indepentent Estonian Republic.

    25.2. BETTER DEAD THAN GAY (51 min)

  • Director Christopher O'Hare, Convergence Prod, UK, 1995
    Simon Harvey was both Christian and gay. Unable to reconcile his religious beliefs and his homosexuality, he committed suicide. The film pieces together the last six monts of Simon's life.

    A Film about two Karmapas - two worshipped boys - and the big religious and political upheaval set off by their excistence, which made China change its policy in Tibet.

    The Credit Municipal de Paris is still called "Chez ma Tante". This very old institution, known by all, whose main activity is still loan on colectorel, is potrayed here without indulgence.

    22.4. WANT TO DIE (40 min)

  • Director Boudewijn Schoewert, Hiemstra+Rutten, Netherland, 1996
    A reality-documentary about eutanasia. What happens when a man has only one wish: to die. After an accident he is in an agony of plain and visits several hospitals in Holland. Nobody can help him.

    29.4. LICENSED TO KILL (80 min)

    Licenced to kill is a devasting inquiry into violence targeted at gay men and the social fabric that allows it to continue.

    7.5.OUT FOR LOVE...BE BACK SHORTLY

  • Director Dan Katzir, Israel. 1977
    This is the first film made by a young Israeli, which expresses the outcry of his generation as it struggles to find love and privacy amidst the reality of daily terror and hate. In his autobiographical film, director Dan Katzir, a former officer in the paratroops intimately reveals his love story with his girlfriend Iris who is about to begin her army service.

    14.5. A TRAIN OF MEMORY

    This is a documentary film about a train trip right in the city center of Helsinki. The trip is not long but it is full of cultural history. There are people, houses, the shipyard and the harbour. There's also the Parliament building where decisions are made about our public affairs.

    20.5. TRANSFORMATION (52 min)

  • Directors Susana Aikin & Carlos Aparicio, Starfish Productions, USA, 1996.
    Ricardo, former homeless prostitute and transvestite, underwent after finding out that he was HIV positive. He decided he was not going to die on the streets and moved out to change his life.
